Another cold front past through Anna Maria Island Last night, leaving behind 20 knt winds out of the north north west and about a 20 degree temperature change. This making everything a little difficult and bumpy. I was lucky enough to get both of my trips in today and surprisingly the fish bit very well all day.
My morning trip I had out the Willis family, all four of these guys had their opportunity at some large model Snook and also landed a hand full of Jack Cervelle and Spotted Sea Trout. Our two largest Snook went 30 inches and 32 inches and they were almost back to back! Even though the North winds blew hard the Willis family did very well and had an awesome trip.
My afternoon trip also had a great Anna Maria Island charter fishing experience today. The Putz boys from Kansas laid the smack down on some big Snook all afternoon. Joe had the high stick landing a 34 inch Snook and a 30 incher. His dad John had a absolute giant in but it came off right at the boat!
All of our fish caught today around Anna Maria island were caught on pilchard that I caught throwing my 10 ft cracker cast net on a grass flat this morning. We also find that using 20 pound braided line with a 30lb flourocarbon leader and a 1/0 Owner Mutu light circle hook is best suited for catching big snook. The rods we use are Star Stellar Light 7’6 8-16 lb fast action paired with a Shimano Spheros 4000 series reel.
Inspite of the harsh conditions Sarasota and Tampa bay are fishing very well right now, if you are looking for a fishing charter out of Anna Maria Island now is the time. Tight lines, Capt. Wes Wildman
