Man what a spring break we had here on Anna Maria Island. Sarasota and Tampa Bay have just been full of life. My only complaint is that’s it’s just been so windy for the past 3-4 weeks, but it ain’t windy under water, and ya just can’t catch these fish sitting on the couch.
The Spanish Mackerel bit has been very good inside the bay, and if you have fished with us in the past you know that I absolutely love these fish for making ceviche, poke bowls, sushi and just sashimi style. They are such underrated fish, although the bigger ones are best as they seem to have more fat running through the loins. Give it a try sometime, I promise you will not be disappointed.
We have also been having really good luck with the Speckeled Sea Trout. Some really nice fish around right now, which is so great to see. We have had a few days that we caught 40-50 Trout in an hour or so. It seems that any deep grass flat will have specs around it right now.
Starting to see some schools of the bigger Jack Crevelle showing up around Anna Maria Island as well. These fish are so much fun to fight on light tackle, the bigger they get the meaner they are. They can cause absolute chaos if you are not prepared when the come by the boat. Big flat fish just absolute balls of muscle that do not tire out very easily. The down fall to these fish is they just don’t make great table fare, but they do make awesome shark bait!
The weather is absolutely gorgeous right now, highs in the upper 70s low 80s with all the sunshine you could want. The fishing is only going to get better as we start getting more consistent weather as summer aproaches. Which means the Tarpon will be showing up soon! If you have chosen the Anna Maria Island area for your families vacation this year and are looking for a fun filled day on the water, give us a call we love making memories and new fishing buddies.
